Kid’s Spirit

See what a five-year-old kid gave me last week :D

small

My housemate’s nephew came to visit recently during the school holidays and he was a refreshing addition to the house during his short stay. Though he had been with us for a short time, but he had left warm feelings in each and everyone of us in the house.

What had this little kid of five years old done, to touch us so deeply?

One fine day, he was as usual, running around the house, the living room to be exact, like a lively ball of energy. That morning, he ran into my room looking bored, so I gave him some rough papers, a pencil and a children’s story book about the enormous crocodile.

I asked him to look at the pictures and draw the pictures he like. So he sat down beside me and started drawing the crocodile. He managed to draw two crocodiles using the pencil I gave him, before her granny called him to get ready to go out. So the picture was just a skeleton of pencil marks.

The next day, again he ran into my room and surprised me with a coloured picture of the crocodile drawings he drew the day before! I was impressed! Because the coloured pictures are really nice! :D

Then he set to work to give the big crocodile a few more friends and baby crocodiles. When he was done, he said he is giving it to me. I was so touched! :)

Even more touching was when all of us came home after work that same day, we realised that actually each of us have a piece of his artwork!

He actually drew five pieces of different pictures on five pieces of paper and gave each of us one of his masterpiece! Oh, how sweet he is! He drew pictures of a motorbike from his t-shirt, two buses, somemore pictures from his t-shirt and some small icons on the rough paper.

A young kid with a big heart indeed, which warmed our hearts hardened by the realities of life.

If someone as young as Joshua could touch people’s lives, how about an adult many times his age? Should we start to feel ashamed of ourselves or take action and start touching people’s lives today and make a difference?

I didn’t get to bid farewell to him. If I see him again, I would want to give him a big hug and say thank you! :)

Just Being Good is Not Good Enough

Think that you are efficient and good in your job? That’s great! However, if you think that alone is going to get you far, you might be in for a shock.

There is this someone who is really good in his/her work, but he/she was feared and disliked by many. Another one, who is also very sharp and efficient in his/her job, but disturbes the harmony in a team ever since he/she came in.

The thing which is sorely missing is the interpersonal skill. This thing is so important that it determines whether a person will be successful or not, be it in the corporate or the business world.

I had this observation that by just being good and excellent in your job alone is not enough. Without the good human relationship, people will still despise, just like the two examples above. And another example which I’ve presented earlier here, goes to show how important this thing called relationship skill is.

Sometimes, I feel, a good interpersonal relationship skill comes from a genuine, sincere and kind heart. No amount of training could substitute that. And I guess, the underlying factor would be love. If a person has love for another human being, the person would be able to have good relationship skill.

It has to come from the heart, not just from the brain, don’t you think so?

A Sign of Insecurity?

What does it means when an experienced person in a particular industry wants to fight with a newbie in the industry for work to do?

Initially I do not understand why this person with 20 over years in the industry wants to even do a job that a newbie does. I couldn’t comprehend, at first. Usually, I believe you would agree with me too, that someone with that kind of vast experience, would have ample and strong confidence of what he/she is doing.

However, the series of events that have happened baffled me. Until one day, I asked a good friend about it. And then it suddenly occurred to me that, this person could be sufferring from serious insecurity.

Probably he/she is afraid of the ‘day’, since he/she has been working for so long. It could also mean that the veteran sees the newbie as a threat to him/her. Could this also mean that the newbie’s job is as important or even more than the person’s?

Of course, the more empowering thought would be that the newbie is doing something of importance, so much so that even a veteran with 20 over years of experience could feel threatened. Hehe…you know which thought is better and more empowering to subscribe to, right?

Human Relationship

This is the time for tears to flow. For some, they are tears of joy; for some, they are tears of sorrow.

Two people who worked equally hard, but received such vast different treatment.

One, had to bear hurting words hurled at her and having her capabilites being belittled.
Whereas for the other, had the higher people fawning over her.

My housemate volunteered cleavage as a possible reason.

From my observations, human relationship still matters in the end.
One had a few tiffs with the higher people, while the other can even joke like a normal friend with the higher people.

What is your say? What is the lesson to learn here?

Be on good terms with people and spare them any headache or problems. Better still if you can alleviate their problems and bring their blood pressure down. Then, you will have people fawning over you.

Harsh reality, but human is this strange being with interesting psychology.
To be successful, you would have to understand this.

Someone asked me what do I understand by the phrase ’survival of the fittest’.
Is it that the strongest always win? Maybe in the past, but no longer applicable these days.
In my definition, the fittest would be someone who can adapt to his or her surroundings the best.

In short, to survive, we need to adapt, and in today’s world, we need to adapt fast to the ever changing world. Flexbility… ahh yes, that’s the word. Be flexible. No one solution can cater to all situations. In this new world, it is customization to fit the situation.

And to the one, my heart goes out to her. I can understand her feelings well as I’ve been in a similar situation before. And to the other one, what did she do right?

New Look For My Site~!

I’m so happy~!! :D :D :D :D can’t stop grinning now hahahahha :D Yay!~

My site finally have a new look! Gave it a nice makeover and now it is really personalised! Ahh so proud of myself right now.

I picked up photoshop on my own with some guidance in just two nights! Wasted the first night with trials and errors though but second night was the productive one.

Thanks so much to my dear housemate Fen! He’s a genius! :D

Although I’ve have not learnt everything yet, at least I’ve known enough basic functions to get this banner up! :D Yippeee~! Woohoo~!!

New Address for My Blog

Finally, I’ve managed to migrate this blog over here from blogspot, after a whole night of trudging through the technicalities, especially the one on upgrading wordpress to the latest version of wordpress 2.2.

The new version has this new widget feature under ‘presentation’ tab, where you can easily add widgets like calender, recent posts, recent comments, archives etc easily onto the sidebar and arrange them as you please. This is one great invention! Kudos to whoever the genius is. He or she definitely knows what newbies are really looking for, especially those not technically-inclined.

Oh well, even if anyone is technically-inclined, I believe people would have better plans for their time than to just get overwhelmed by the amount of htmls and trials and errors which can be quite frustrating at times. So this really save lots of hassle! :D

Besides that, not much difference I guess… that’s what I feel, not sure how others find it. The wordpress site said that there’s better security features though.

If you are thinking of upgrading to the latest version, wordpress site has a pretty comprehensive instructions, so you just need to follow the instructions to get it done.

However, despite the detailed instructions, I find that, for first timers, it can still be pretty challenging, especially the backing up your database step, which is the most important step of all.

If you do not do the database backup well, all your posts will be gone! That’s not a good idea. So better get this first step right.

After you get through this first step, the rest of the steps are a breeze, especially if you have done wordpress installation before.

Oh another feature I’ve discovered today also is the ‘fantastico’ function by my webhost, which allows you to install wordpress and other functions like forum (oh my god!) so much easier! It is really as easy as ABC, just follow the instructions, 123 and hey presto! It’s like magic.

To enjoy this simple and user-friendly feature, I recommend you to use this web hosting service that I’m using because it will save you so much time and hassle! How I wish I had this earlier! Lucky people :p ~

ps: Oh I just learnt that wordpress.com and wordpress.org is totally different! The one I’m referring to here is wordpress.org. So get this right, might save you lots of headaches. If I’m not mistaken, someone said wordpress.org gives your more liberty and control over your own site, by allowing you to install wordpress at any domain name.

The Secret Works!

I had some interesting observations today. I’ve been monitoring the events that happened in the recent happenings in my life. And I am blown away by how the secret works!

It was a series of happenings - an event that leads to another. And they all seemed inter-related.

I’ve been wanting to do reporting, it was on my mind all the time. And then comes along this conference which I’m also interested in. So I requested to go, and my request was granted. And on the day itself, I when I took a cab, the taxi driver was rather negative by saying that there will be traffic jams, and he will t . r . y. - the word I avoid the most.

In my head and heart, I told myself that I will reach at 8.45am and indeed, despite the earlier pessimism, I reached there at 8.45am, almost right on the dot. The taxi driver was rather surprised; he said that the traffic was rather smooth.

Then as the day progressed, I had another vision - to write a report with my byline. And sure enough, it became a reality. My colleague who was supposed to be there also couldn’t make it there as she needs to cover another event. So ended up only me and another guy from money was there. And he didn’t file any story, so the story was all mine.

Then, the series of events that happened after that saw me taking action and the small action led to the final outcome - a report with my byline.

I was so ama-ed. And I began reflecting on the previous thoughts I’ve had which had led to the current happenings in my life. And boy, wasn’t I shocked!

To list some, my current room, the best I’ve ever stayed before, was found with this thought in my mind that I want to get a place cheaper, nearer to work place, bigger and with good housemates. And it materialised.

Another instance was as I was chatting with a friend whom I’ve not kept in touch for some time, led me to declare what I wanted to do after the ‘duration’. And sure enough, the next day, I received an unexpected call from someone who wanted to find me for the plan I told my friend earlier.

I almost freaked out. But it was really a pleasant surprised. The experiment has been successful so far! I’m going to experiment with the secret further by slowly progressing to envisioning even more challenging outcomes that I want to achieve.

I know, I will achieve it, because in my mind, it is already happening.

Get A Piece of The Internet Action

I was surfing the web as usual, reading other people’s blogs and learning about new things, when I stumbled upon this.

I read the write-up on Wei Ping’s blog and was attracted to the novel idea, which I like a lot. I find it rather interesting too and so went to the website to find out more.

From what I’ve read, it sounds like a great and interesting concept, not to say powerful. The idea shows the power of networks, and also the power of compounding. Instead of using it for savings or investment, in this case, it is applied to people.

Here I reproduce the write-up by Wei Ping here (with his permission of course), which I find is quite comprehensive.

Think Different

The crazy ones. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in square holes. Ones who see things differently. They have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, you can glorify them or you can vilify them. What you cannot do, is to ignore them. Because…

Here’s to the crazy ones out there, think different!
